A Magistrate’s court in Nasarawa State has ordered each of the 38 women protesters arrested by the police over alleged unlawful assembly and public disturbance to bail herself with N500,000.

The protesters, who had been remanded in prison custody for the past 12 days, had applied for a review of their bail conditions.  Reviewing the conditions in Lafia, yesterday, the magistrate, Mohammed Abdullahi-Lanze, reduced the sum from N2 million to N500,000 per person, and demanded a surety.

The court ordered the defendants to report at the next adjournment date, which is February 27. Responding, counsel for the defendants, Ayiwulu Baba-Ayiwulu, expressed hope that the women would be released soon to reunite with their families.

Recall that the police, on January 9, arrested the protesters for allegedly blocking the Lafia/Jos road after a Supreme Court judgment affirmed the victory of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.
